When I visited my cousins in Ukkalgaon, India, I did not expect to see the one-room schoolhouse that lay before me. I vividly remember how the children eagerly sat cross-legged on the mud floor, separated from the elements by four rickety walls and a lame excuse for a roof. Coming from a world where smartboards and projectors dominated classrooms I couldn't even comprehend how these children could learn.
I found myself talking to the de-facto mayor of the village, Ulhas Tambe, hearing a first hand account of how the kids learned. In conversation, he brought up the need for a library. It sounded like a perfect solution to a complicated problem. We also talked about how computer labs could provide resources and virtual vocational training for the entire tow. While in planning for several years, no funding could be found for this library. It was then that I realized that I could help. I could bring in income from my freelance web-development to help fund these libraries. KnoMore was born.
